A BRIEF HISTORY
Telluride began as a silver mining camp along the San Miguel river in the mid-1800s. In 1875, the first gold mining claim was made and the area was settled thereafter. Originally named ‘Columbia’, the town name was changed to avoid confusion with a town of the same moniker in California and renamed Telluride after the element tellurium, which was never actually found in the area. The Telluride valley and surrounding area provided zinc, lead, copper, silver and gold ore for many years.
A generous portion of the Town of Telluride is part of the Telluride Historic District and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Located in the southwestern San Juans of Colorado – just an hour drive from Montrose, CO or two hour drive from Durango, CO – Telluride sits in a box canyon with just one road in and out of town. Steep forested mountains and cliffs make up the canyon and at the head are two falls, Bridal Veil and Ingram. A free gondola system links the old mining town of Telluride to the more recently developed ski and golf epicenter of Mountain Village.
Telluride is home to people from across the US and the globe; with ski instructors from Austria, second home owners from Texas and local business owners from New England. The economy is driven by two distinct tourism season; Summer and Winter. The summer in Telluride is chalk full of festivals to suite every taste and the winter is filled with powder days and bluebird skies. Outdoor activities are the most prominent pull in both seasons, however the musical acts, visiting artists, and local productions add a zeal to the area that is uniquely Telluride.
